When King Mohammed VI of Morocco took the throne in 1999, just hours after the death of his father, King Hassan II, there were low expectations for reform and progress in the monarchy.  King Mohammed surprises everyone by forming a human rights commission and reforming the family code of law in favor of women’s rights.  His marriage to a modern, educated woman, Princess Salma, provides Moroccan women with a new role model and solidifies the nation’s course for modernization and reform.
